NEW SHOW Tonight and Tomorrow (5/26-27): See scheduled events page for news on an upcoming multimedia event featuring dance, movies, and a new composition of mine, developed in collaboration with choreographer Julie Mayo.

Big news about something small!

"I can hear your heartbeat for the very first time" (Yes, Madonna's 'Like a Virgin' was stuck in my head during this precious life moment.  Nice, eh?)

I would like to introduce you to our 3 and a half month old baby!  S/he has been 2 years in the making, and it is so great to see that heart beating, spine growing, with arms, legs and head moving around so animated, like an Indonesian shadow puppet.  We are in love.  A beautiful product of a birthday/valentine's day trip to Washington D.C..

If you look really close you can also see an added surprise

Mama is doing well and is glowing like a temple of life!  Of course, she thinks she looks like a cow and can't fit in to most of her clothes, but is too small for maternity clothes!  I think she looks beautiful:

March 2005:

The bone collector

So as you all know, I am working on our house, trying to help it reach its potential.  It has been fighting me tooth and nail all the way.  Between the cuts, bruises, falls and cursing we have found chopped up floor joists, exterior particle board walls, floods, falling trees, theft, mud pit lawns, etc.

Well, just when I think I have seen it all I made an interesting discovery on Sunday in the crawl space.  BONES.  Big Bones.  Lots of bones.  All in a 3 x 3 carpet-lined hole in the ground.  Maybe someone buried their beloved pet, right?  Well, did I mention the bones were WRAPPED IN A CHILD'S DRESS!!!!!!!  Yup.  Our Money Pit suddenly became The Ring, or maybe Poltergeist.  See for yourself (these are just the bones I could fit in 1 bag):

Right above the dress is a clump of hair.  Nice!

"I'll never wash this face again!"

Lots of police!  Funny group.  1 was scared, 2 were annoyed, and 1 was a cajun from Louisiana.  He was all into voodoo and was the best officer there.  Actually got down in the space, and tried to solve it, and 'lift our curse'.  He was awesome.  In the end, the medical examiner (how CSI!)  deduced that the bones were from a number of 'large non-humans'.  And that there were gnaw marks on the bones, indicating they were eaten.  Nice.  But what about the, um, DRESS!!!  'Who knows' is the only answer we got.  (Cue twilght zone theme).

November 2004:

First Show in Richmond!

This show is the showcase of a series of workshop sessions I have been involved in with The Field Richmond.  This was my first time working with The Field, and it has been a great experience - check out www.thefieldrichmond.org

The entire show will run about an hour and feature performances/exhibits of dance, acting, and photography, in addition to my music.

I will be debuting a reinterpretation of two songs from one of my favorite albums - the Miles Davis / Gil Evans collaboration Porgy and Bess.  When I first heard this album I was a high school guitar player playing in a rock band.  It was the first time I ever heard anything that 'rocked' that wasn't rock. This album was heavy.  From then on I always wanted to reinterpret it to fit in a more modern, guitar-based setting highlighting the angular lines, intense dynamics, and sheer power of the arrangements.  I will be joined by Kevin Cornell (of Richmond-based Dark Little Rooms) on drums, and Josh Quarles and David Spivey (formerly of Richmond's Stone Kitchen among other groups) on guitars.

This is the first step towards featuring the entire album in a live setting.  Stay tuned.  And please come by!

August 2004:

The best of times, and the truly worst of times

I have been very bad with updating this site, writing/recording/playing music, or really anything good over the past few months.  The big news was the sudden, unexpected passing of our beloved dog Mimi in June.  She is still in our hearts and minds daily.  She is so missed.  This was the toughest death in which K and I have ever had to deal. We were her protector and we couldn't save her from a very serious digestive obstruction.  She was like our child.  Here are some pictures of our girl.  We have become serious dog lovers, pitbulls in particular.  As part of our grieving  process we have volunteered with the SPCA and have been working with another shy, timid, emotionally troubled dog named Ellwood.  We also visited the Richmond animal control and couldn't believe the horrible conditions (dirty, overcrowded) and policies (killing the animals within 5-10 days). We are so fortunate to have had so much support from family and friends!

The biggest respite from our sadness has been the recent addition to our family - Magnolia (aka Maggie, Maggie May, Magpie). She has been a joy, and has really developed a great, unique personality.  As unbelieveable as it might sound, we almost lost her for good this week.  She escaped from K's mom's yard.  Here is my instant message version of what happened:

aboutadam2: k went to the beach to house sit her mom's.  got there sunday at 5:30, i was in richmond, going to NY in the morning.  k let the dog in the backyard - 6 foot fence all around - and went back out front to get the bags and stuff

aboutadam2: she came back and maggie was gone, called me, i made up 50 fliers with pics and sped there

aboutadam2: she went looking in the neighborhood - i got there and we split up, several sightings of her by people, but no luck

aboutadam2: went to an all night kinkos and made 1000 copies of flier and put them on every stop sign and post around

aboutadam2: woke up at 6 and started looking again - after printing out some mapquest maps and circling an intersection that led to a golf course - figure i would start there - but on the way stopped to hang a few more fliers

aboutadam2: weird thing - got calls that she was at the intersection i had circled -- totally weird!!  of all the intersections...

aboutadam2: got there in 5 minutes, but the people tried to approach her and she ran, they said she was limping alot :-(

aboutadam2: we couldn't find her anywhere, but posted new fliers in this neighborhood and did this all day - we got a few calls she was further away and went there and posted - got everyone involved, groundskeepers, mailmen, kids, retirees, pizza delivery, businesses, etc.

aboutadam2: went to the 2 animal controls, spca's etc, businesses, vets, petsmart

aboutadam2: but no more calls for nearly 36 hours -- we thought she was injured and went and hid and she was dead -- we looked everywhere, under bushes, in the woods, behind dumpsters, parks, it seemed hopeless

aboutadam2: amazingly, on tuesday late afternoon both our phones start ringing off the hook and she is 2 blocks away from k's moms -- i had put out her food, bed, toys, my dirty clothes, hoping she would pick up the scent

aboutadam2: so these 9 kids are following her, while we are both on the phone with people

aboutadam2: we are like 10 minutes away in a new area of town hanging fliers, and thankfully don't get lost and are zooming there -- all the while telling the kids to follow but not chase or try to catch her cuz we didn't want her running back across the highway - which she had done countless times by now

aboutadam2: but they do start chasing her and we're hearing it all unfold on the phone

aboutadam2: she is running away, towards the busy road

aboutadam2: she is crossing it, o my god, *heart attack*

aboutadam2: the cars stopped for her *whew*

aboutadam2: she went into the woods and they lost sight of her :(

aboutadam2: we get there, run into the woods with her toy and calling her name -- prickers, swamp, thigh deep water -- aboutadam2: can't see her

aboutadam2: finally see her, she goes to k and i carry her out of the woods, take her to the vet

aboutadam2: she was limping bc all her foot pads are worn down and blistered from walking on the hot pavement -- she lost 5 pounds

aboutadam2: but she is doing great!

aboutadam2: i was really ready to pack up and move far away, never to be heard from again -- ready to just kill ourselves

aboutadam2: we have gotten more calls since, and have had sightings of her FAR away from where we lost her

aboutadam2: i feel like if any lesson came out, it was that we did everything we could --- which made me feel better since i felt like maybe i could have done more to save mimi

aboutadam2: I was amazed how the community came together to help us, everyone helped -- cutting across age, race, socioeconomic background.

aboutadam2: needless to say, i believe in miracles, and the powerful combination of persistence, planning, unconditional love, luck and the kindness of strangers

In other news, we are 90% done with our bathroom renovation,  2 months later than planned.  Still need to install the window/door trim and any wainscoting I am thinking about.  Came out pretty good.  Hmmmmmm, what is our next project?

Lastly, we were fostering a mama cat from the neighborhood and her few week old kittens for the last month.  They were alternately fun, annoying, cute, and stinky.  They should find good homes through the SPCA.  YAY!

March 2004

So what have I been up to?  I turned 30 this year and as a surprise my wife planned a trip to Belize!  Here is a link to some of the pics:

How cool is that?  I had no idea, she even packed our bags and went out and bought new underwear for me so I didn't notice any missing.  She thought of everything.  The first half of the trip we spent at Francis Ford Coppella's Blancaneaux Lodge in the Cayo District.  It was in the mountains with lots of watering holes to swim in, thatched huts to stay in and great food to eat.  The second half of the trip was at the beach in San Pedro.  While there we did lots of relaxing, swam with 8' sharks and reys, and made some new friends.  It is a cool town where everyone drives golf carts and goes diving.  The food was really some of the best we have had on any trip, from local fare to mexican, to asian fusion!    For guilty pleasure TV trivia we had lunch at the place where Temptation Island was shot.  We also had dinner with some friends we made earlier in the trip here at Mata Chica.  What a glorious resort!  Very hipster cool.  So that was my 30th birthday.  It lasted  week!  Here are some pixs.

The other major event has been the on-going renovation to our 1st floor bathroom.  Before it was really cramped, the floor was in bad shape, as was the plumbing, electricity, window, subfloor, and floor joists.  Just about everything, though of course as you get into it you find all these new problems.  Here are some pixs.  They don't show all the dust that has been created, that is everywhere, including up my nose.  The subfloor was essentially 6 inches of dirt, rocks and cement dust.  Not so fun.  We still are finalizing the design, but we hope to finish this before the end of May.  Wish us luck!

February 2004

'.org' - WTF is that all about?  Can you get more lame than that?
Yeah, I got a .org.  I always thought that meant I had to be doing good for the world and giving away coats or my blood or building houses or something.  You know, some non-profit good-doin'.  But no.  There will be none of that here.  .org is really just a cyber scarlet letter.  It says "even though the internet has been around for years I never got off my ass and registered adamrose.com."  Hell, not even the runner-up adamrose.net.  Does .org say 'loser' or what?  But I digress.
